Rare Alfa TZ Prototipo picture for your time:

!!! UNKNOWN CONTENT TYPE !!!

Me and three friends are planning a roadtrip this summer (start and endpoint in the netherlands, rest isn't planned yet). Two of us are mechanically adept. To add some 'adventure' to said roadtrip we were thinking about buying a very cheap car for the roadtrip, and then reselling it afterwards.

Secondhand cars from the early 90's are cheap here due to tax reasons. As cars here are expensive to own, the marginal cost to step up from a 90's car to a 00's car are minimal, which means ~500 euros can net you a running, driving, high mileage example of a mid-size car from the early 90's. This includes Saab 900s, Ford Mondeos, VW Passats, Volvo 940s and even Alfa 155s are cars that are feasible. So that would be the crop of cars to choose from.

Now I haven't done a lot of research into this, but can anybody here tell me it would be either extremely stupid, or a genuinely good idea.

It sounds like it would be a little of both. If you grab a couple GoPros and document your trip, it could make for a pretty sweet story to tell. My friends and I did a similar trip last year, from Seattle to Dallas in the US. Definitely worth it.

Unless you can get a neat car that you'd really like to try out, it seems like a lot of hassle for little potential gain. You might have something go wrong, in which case you'd have to attempt to fix it on the side of the road, which I guess might be fun if you didn't care about getting to your destination? But if that's what you're looking for why not just buy a project car separately?

On top of all that, wouldn't you have to go through all the crap like registering the vehicle, getting insurance, etc.? Not to mention finding a buyer and selling it when you're done. If you wanted to try out a neat car I'd say just put some money up and rent something cool.

You raise valid points. Sadly, the more interesting cars also are the ones with a reputation for unreliability.

The destination isn't going to be fixed as far as I can tell anyway, so no problems there.

Registering isn't that much of a hassle here. It's a bit of paperwork, but it's not like you're spending more than an hour on it. Finding the buyer and selling is indeed the hard part. Renting something cool would be way more expensive.

Well, I guess if you're up for the risks it could be one of those that's either pretty cool or not worth the trouble. Only one way to find out…

From your list of choices, the Ford Mondeo be my choice. But before buying anything, have it inspected by a reputable Ford garage. Tell the mechanic what you are attempting to do and ask him whether he thinks the car you have __carefully selected__ at least has a chance doing the job you require. If sound otherwise, have him do a basic service and take along some simple but vital parts he recommends. Even if you may lack skills to replace whatever you brought along, if it indeed does fail on your journey, at least you’ll save time and the mechanic doing the swap will be able to do it instantly, if a simple part is present. Have a GREAT time and don’t forget to check the oil level after two tanks of gas, to make sure you are aware if the engine needs some. As the biggest crime you can do to a car is to destroy an engine due to lack of oil...

And THANK YOU for finding those interesting rolling chassis photos I have never seen before.

One of my VERY FAVORITE cars, evers since seeing a road test for it many a year ago. Had a chance to inspect one while being gone over in Italy by an incredible little shop. Inquired whether for sale but the owner knew what he had, so no deal to be had. ;-(

Oh, just realized (you having the same address at both) that I have posted my comment and pictures to this subject rather than the intended BODY ON FRAME one. To be more relevant, can you move it to the latter, please?
